10 People Killed in Terror Attack in Munich
There was a mass shooting in Munich, Germany in a shopping centre on Friday evening that left 10 people dead and 21 injured. The Munich police had launched a massive manhunt to catch the attackers and shut down the whole city. But news has emerged that the Munich Police has given an “all-clear” signal at the time of writing this report.
The police say that the attacker had killed himself and that he had acted alone. There were many children among those killed, including a 15-year old girl. The injured children have been taken to a nearby children’s hospital.
Police virtually shut down the city, stopping trains, buses and trams and closed the highways. They ordered all citizens to stay in their homes and hunted for the suspected killers on late Friday night and early hours of Saturday morning.
The police were able to find a body near the shopping centre, which appears to be that of the gunman himself. They also used a bomb disposal robot to search the entire site for booby traps and explosives.
The attacks began at 6PM on Friday when the terrorist started shooting at the McDonald’s restaurant outside the Olympia shopping centre, which is close to the site of the 1972 Munich Olympics.
The video of the shooting shows everyone feeling in terror even as the terrorist calmly and indiscriminately open fire killing anyone and everyone he could see.
One father said, “My 23-year-old daughter was part of a group that locked themselves inside H&M to protect themselves. I spoke to her over the phone and she was crying, but then her battery ran out.” He said he did not want to be named for the interview.
Another witness, a mother, told CNN that the shooter was screaming Islamic slogans even as he was killing people. The woman said, “My son saw in the toilet, the man loading his gun. It was a pistol. I come out of the toilet and I hear the — like an alarm boom boom boom. He is killing the children. They make nothing. They were sitting to eat. They can’t run.”
The police were asked if it was a terror attack. A police spokesman said, “If a man with a gun in a shopping centre opens fire and eight people are dead, we have to work on the assumption that this was not a normal crime and was a terrorist act.”
Peter Altmaier, a top German official said, “We’re excluding nothing but there’s no clarity at this stage, and we know nothing for sure.”
Cansu Muyan, who lives close to the Olympia shopping centre, said, “I suddenly saw everyone running past. Then a shopkeeper told us all to leave as quickly as possible so we all started running as well.”
A witness, Florian Horn said, “I was shopping when I heard three shots, then we ran out and about 40 seconds later we heard five shots from outside.”
The staff at the shopping mall spoke to the media. One of them said, “Many shots were fired. I can’t say how many, but it’s been a lot. All the people from outside came streaming into the store and I only saw one person on the ground who was so severely injured that he definitely didn’t survive.”
A witness, Jennifer Hartel explained, “I ran out, I was so afraid, and then some people brought me and several others into their garden and apartment where we found safety.”
