The list of Britain’s richest people is out! Real estate developers, David Reuben and Simon Reuben, both brothers, have been declared as the richest men in Britain, with a net worth of £13.1bn, up £3.4bn from last year. The two men have sizeable interests in real estate and several internet assets as well.Sri and Gopi Hinduja, both brothers, come second in the list of Britain’s richest people with a net worth of £13bn. Last year’s richest man, the owner of the Warner Music Group owner, Len Blavatnik has fallen two places to third. He lost £1.6bn of his wealth and is now worth £11.6bn.The greatest fall has been that of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Mittal was the richest man in Britain and one of the wealthiest men in the world in 2008, when he was worth £27.7bn fortune. That made him at that point the wealthiest man in British history. But he has lost his wealth by quite a bit and is today worth £7.1bn.Mittal cannot be blamed for this. The steel industry has lost a lot of value all over the world. In Britain, over 5000 jobs in the steel industry have been lost this year alone. At least, Mittal is still worth £7.1bn!Roman Abramovich, the owner of the Chelsea football club lost £890m of his fortune this year and saw his net worth decline to £6.4bn. He made his fortune as the owner of the Russian oil company Sibneft.Another owner of an English Premier League side, Mike Ashley lost one-third of his net worth and saw his wealth decline by £1.1bn to £2.4bn. He makes his money from the sports retailer, Sports Direct.Retail tycoon Sir Philip Green lost £280m of his wealth and is today worth £3.2bn. He suffered a huge loss recently because of a failed business which he sold for just $1.The biggest losers of 2016 have been Carrie and François Perrodo who own the Franco-British oil firm Perenco. Their net worth dropped from £2.45bn to £3.35bn because of the fall in oil prices. One of the most impressive success stories has been of brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa, who started with a single old garage in Bury just 15 years ago and have since built a major empire worth £700m by buying and renovating service stations. They now have a 341-strong chain of garages across Europe. Their story is a very inspiring one for all of us. The richest self-made entrepreneur in the UK is Denise Coates, the owner of the Bet365 business. She is worth nearly £3.8bn.What about Queen Elizabeth? She is 90 years old and has a net worth of an impressive £340m. Well, unlike the others mentioned here, she was simply born lucky and didn’t earn any of her money. There are some who have complained about that fact that the 1,000 richest people in Britain own the same amount of assets as the poorest 40%. John Hood of the Equality Trust said, “The level of inequality in the UK is both completely unjustifiable and hugely damaging for society”.“A wealth of evidence now shows us that living in a more unequal country means you’re more likely to suffer from poor mental and physical health, have poorer education, trust people less, be the victim of violent crime and even die earlier. It’s not good enough for politicians to repeatedly fail to act on this,” Mr. Hood added. Author: Raghav Hegde – India
