Massive protests against Trump!
A lot of liberals and leftists in America are struggling to come to terms with the fact that Donald Trump is going to be the new President of the United States. Even as Trump plans to take over the Presidency on January 20, activists have started organizing massive protests against him in many cities.
Some of the protests have even turned violent. For example, a Donald Trump supporter confronted protestors in Portland, Oregon and shot one of them. The protester has been hospitalized, but the man who shot him has escaped.
Protesters in Portland blocked traffic and fought with police. The police responded with pepper spray and flash-bang devices. Protestors also took over Los Angeles, saying, “We reject the president elect” and “Whose streets? Our Streets”.
Protestors in New York gathered in Washington Square Park and at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue. Over 10,000 people marched from Union Square to Trump Tower.
“Join us in the streets! Stop Trump and his bigoted agenda,” the protestors said.
Patrisse Cullors of Black Lives Matter, said their movement was “grieving and mourning,” adding, “We are bringing folks together to imagine what kinds of organizing we will need to do under a Trump presidency. I do think we can organize as we have been, and build something bigger and stronger than the hate Trump and his team have exhibited towards marginalized communities.”
More protests are planned. A million women march is planned in Washington on the day of Trump’s official inauguration as President.
Most of the protests are not just because of Hillary Clinton’s loss, but because of the feeling that Trump’s victory is a negation of President Obama’s legacy and everything he stood for.
Top Conservative intellectual and columnist Charles Krauthammer said on Fox News Channel’s “The Kelly File”, “Obama’s legacy is toast. Obama’s legacy is gone. Which explains why he’s so desperately and unusually in American history campaigns so roughly against Donald Trump. He knew that so much of his accomplishments had been built on ramming stuff through the House and the Senate with very little consensus, in fact none on ObamaCare coming from the Republicans, on executive orders that are reversible with the stroke of a pen, on regulation that is easily reversible, that it collapses if and when his successor turns out to be a Republican.”
Mr. Krauthammer continued, “And that’s what happened. And I think he’s going to end up as a parenthesis in American history in the sense that he thought when he came into office, he thought he was the Ronald Reagan of the left, meaning Reagan came in, he changed the ideological trajectory of the country, he turned it into a conservative country where that was sort of the underlying consensus. Obama thought he was going to change all of that and begin a liberal ascendency the way that Reagan began. A conservative ascendency.”
Well, it did not turn out that way. The country rejected his policies. Remember what Obama said when he was campaigning, I’m not on the ballot but my legacy is on the ballot. It was on the ballot and the country has rejected it. The idea that he would be the beginner of a new liberal ascendency is now dead and Obama I think understands that very well,” Mr. Krauthammer concluded.
