The primary shopping district of Colombo is Pettah, neighbouring Colombos central business district of Fort. The narrow concretized lanes of Pettah are home to numerous stalls and stores that sell all kinds of goods like electronics, antiques, watches, handbags, clothes, shoes, books, jewellery, grocery, etc. at rock bottom prices. Particular items are found aplenty in certain areas of the district. Shops selling musical instruments are bunched around Malwatte Avenue, sellers of glass and mirrors are found around Prince Street and for household items one must visit the shops on Keyzer Street.

Despite the fact that the district comprises of many lanes and by lanes, shoppers should not fear getting lost as each lane ultimately merges with the districts main road.

Paradise Road, Odel, Barefoot and House of Fashion are retail chains that are present at numerous locations in the city and sell a diverse range of high quality Sri Lankan crafts, house wares, clothing, art pieces and even tea. Barefoot and Paradise Road also have in-house cafés that serve good food.

The Laksala Emporium, operated by the Government of Sri Lanka, sells authentic Sri Lankan handicrafts. Although the price tags on the crafts may burn a hole in your pocket, the quality of the emporiums goods is supreme. Hand-spun cloth, batik, lacquer ware, wooden art pieces are all available in the emporium. For purchasing jewellery, one should visit the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Exchange.

Several malls like the Crescat Boulevard and Majestic City, both located on Galle Road, have come up in recent years. These malls feature amusement centres, cinemas, restaurants, cafés and supermarkets apart from big brand clothing stores and handicrafts.

Tourists intending to buy the famous Ceylon Tea should head to Tea Tang or Miesna Tea, both having outlets at the airport and reputed for selling the finest Ceylon Tea.
